Stables Development Approved

Media Release 8th September 2022

New Stables Complex DA Approved

Newcastle Racecourse has received confirmation that the proposed stables complex has been approved by the NSW Department of Planning.

The multimillion-dollar development has been in the planning stage for a number of years and was resumed following delays caused by Covid and a revision of the plans.

The proposed new stables complex at the Newcastle Racecourse comprises of the demolition of an existing equine pool, workshops, sheds and stalls with the construction of new stables, ancillary buildings and car parking.

Newcastle Jockey Club’s CEO Duane Dowell was pleased with the news “We are delighted with the approval for our Stables Project which will provide enormous benefits to the club, the racing industry and the local community. This is an important next step in our masterplan to create a world class racing and entertainment precinct. While some funding is confirmed through Racing NSW the balance of funds is still required with the hope that some of that may come from federal or state govt given the significant benefits to the local economy.”

The approval supports the Stables Development Project being in the public interest and would provide a range of benefits for the region and the State as a whole, including capital investment of construction jobs, full time employment opportunities and local development contributions.

Newcastle Jockey Club has been operating at Newcastle Racecourse since 1906. For over a century, Newcastle Racecourse has been a significant venue for thoroughbred racing and job creation. This recent approval attests to NJC’s commitment to deliver value to the community and elevating standards within the racing industry with improved facilities.

The approval follows a few months after Newcastle Jockey Club, Hunter Water and the City Of Newcastle announced plans to investigate capturing stormwater for irrigation at Newcastle Racecourse and to nearby sporting fields.
