Only five days into the new season Kris Lees not only lands the first Group race of the season but quinellaed the Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. The market indicated that Lee’s three-time Group 1 winner Le Romain ($1.95) would be triumphant first up from a spell however, it was the Newcastle stables bonnie mare Invincible Gem ($6.50) that returned a winner.
The four-year-old had not raced since a gallant second in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas in March but Lees had her ready to fire on Saturday. “She has been working with Le Romain and he has probably worked a little better. However, she is a high-quality mare and has banked more than $600,000 in prizemoney. I have set her for the Group 2 Golden Pendant at Rosehill in September and all going well the Group 1 Myer Classic at Flemington on November 4 is a nice race for her. Le Romain was exposed the whole trip and he probably ran out of condition in the last 50 metres. He is in for a good preparation.” Lees said.
Earlier in the day the Lees trained Wahng Wah was successful at Randwick. Lees’ flying start to the 2017/18 season continued on Sunday when the China Horse Club owned Grasslands was successful at Muswellbrook.
