Launch of Beanies for Brain Cancer month a success at Burwood Inn Race Day
1500+ patrons attended the 2nd edition of the Burwood Inn Race Day supporting the Mark Hughes Foundation on Saturday June 3, 2023.The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) was formed in 2014 by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following the ex-Knights diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2013. The MHF has become a meaningful cause to Novocastrians. The MHF’s most recognisable fundraising activity is the Beanies For Brain Cancer month which kicks off on June 1 with new beanies each year.
The race day raised just over $43,000 from donations, raffles, auctions and merchandise sales.
The Burwood Inn Mark Hughes Foundation Cup was won by Aristonous for Trainer Annabel Neasham. Gary Harley – Sky Racing presenter and past football coach of Mark Hughes – presented the Cup which was decorated with a MHF beanie.
Also in attendance were former Newcastle Knights Players Steve Crowe, Kurt Gidley, Mark Hughes, Brett Clements, Bill Peden and Jarrod O’Doherty showing their support for the cause.
Trekkers, Grace and Sam supplemented the day with funds raised for their 150km Big Three Trek from Newcastle to Sydney for the Mark Hughes Foundation, we wish them all the best on their journey.
Newcastle Racecourse CEO Duane Dowell was thrilled with the support from patrons on the day for such a worthy cause.
