Sporting Hope Association

The Sporting Hope Association was established to amalgamate sporting bodies within the Port Stephens & Hunter region to raise funds and support the general community support groups in the area. Sporting Hope is now embarking on its next initiative to assist a Lemon Tree Passage family who are in urgent need of assistance.

Racing For Riley

On 5th August 2017 Riley Coburn-Hall was seriously injured in a rugby league accident, playing for the under 14 Mallabula rugby league team. Riley dissected a coronary artery when tackled by an opposition player, which resulted in blood clotting and a stroke. The immediate medical procedures also included a further four operations; an implant to cover the left side of his brain and recovery from a staph infection.

His mother Kathleen found it necessary to take five months leave from her job to care for Riley and although having returned to work at Tanilba Shores Aged Care Facility, Kathleen is still meeting the demands of caring for Riley and the financial consequences of the accident.

In this respect, Riley will require some two years of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. Is it also considered important for Riley’s rehabilitation to return to his school, Hunter River High School at Heatherbrae as soon as possible. Limited financial support has been provided to this point, but is insufficient to cover the purchase of a suitable vehicle to transport Riley and the provision of physiotherapy equipment for Riley to use at home.

Sporting Hope has taken on the task of acquiring a vehicle for Kathleen and Riley and assisting with the ongoing maintence and service costs. Sporting Hope Associaiton will be hosting fundraising activities at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday 30 June 2018 at which time the Port Stephens Cup will also be held.

Limited tables available in the Mark Murphy Lounge $22 per person inclusive of Racecourse Admission.

First race is scheduled to jump at 11.49am and last race at 4.09pm.
