Master Builders Association Race Day

Newcastle Racecourse is proud to host the Master Builders Association Race Day on March 9. MBA proudly support the Mates In Construction charity and offer all MBA card holders FREE ENTRY* to Newcastle Racecourse. Featured on this day is the Polytrack Provincial Championships Heat at Newcastle.

Newcastle Racecourse is home of arguably the two leading Provincial trainers in New South Wales, Kris Lees & Paul Perry. Both names synonymous when it comes to outstanding racehorses. Lees has had the monopoly over the Provincial Championships Series since its inception winning two of the four finals at Royal Randwick on Championship Day and eight qualifier heats.

The Newcastle Provincial Qualifying Heat will be held on March 9 over the 1400 metre trip. It is the second of the qualifying heats for 2019. Traditionally it has been the last opportunity for horses to secure a start in the final race. The 1400 metre start at Newcastle has a beautiful run in of 450 metres to the first turn, giving a capacity field the opportunity to find a nice position before the run home. This is the second day of the Newcastle Autumn Racing Carnival, with the Group 3 Suez Newcastle Newmarket held the prior day, March 8.

Another Newcastle Nobbys race will also feature on the Saturday race program, with prizemoney $5,000 above the standard Provincial purse. To be eligible to race, horses need to have had at least four starts at Provincial and Country meetings in Australia within 12 months of the nomination date. Previous winners of this class include Invicta, Oakfield Missile, Our Winnie, Dawn Raid & Kotinos.

MATES In Construction

MATES in Construction is a charity established in 2008 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers.  We are unique in that we foster ownership and control of the program with the Australian building and construction industry. The MATES in Construction program is based on the simple idea that “suicide is everyone’s business” and that if the building and construction industry in Australia is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of workers and to reduce suicide then it cannot be left to the mental health professionals, but rather everyone in the industry must play their part. We are independent of employers and unions and never work directly for a particular employer, but for the construction industry generally. Programs are delivered across the industry regardless of employer and / or union affiliation. We were established in response to a major report on suicide [the AISRAP Report] within the Queensland Commercial Building and Construction Industry.  This report found that suicide rates in the industry were higher than the Australian average for men, and that youth suicide within the industry could be as much as 2.38 times common than amongst other young Australian men. We provide suicide prevention through community development programs on sites and support workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. Together with the Oz-Help Foundation, we also provide Life Skills Toolbox training to apprentices and young workers.
