Sad news yesterday with the passing of former Newcastle Racecourse based jockey Normie Rose.
Normie was a young Aboriginal jockey who moved to Newcastle from Dirrabandi in Queensland to forge a career in racing and support his mother and siblings back home.
He became a popular figure among the racing fraternity riding work for a number of local trainers. Normie passed away on his 81st birthday. He is survived by his children Shane & Julie and nine grandchildren. RIP
